Alto Springs
The Community Center is just inside of a gate on FM 2745 where the sign says "Alto Springs Cemetery". Annie Lee McCarver Davis, born in Kosse, lived in Alto Springs, has lived in Waco for close to 60 years, said that as a small child, she and the other children would sing and have plays on the stage just beyond the piano. She said they would have square dances all the time here, and on Sundays they would have church. She thinks the Community Center was built in 1931, but before it was built, there was a 3 room schoolhouse close by, with porches on each side and little cloak rooms where they hung up jackets and a shelf where they put their lunch. She started first grade there (around 1929). The schoolhouse was moved at some point, and she had been told it was moved to Marlin and that a family lived in it, but she is not sure if that is true. She says that the community center was actively used from when it was first built in 1931 until she was 20, which would have been 1943.Outside View Of Old Community Center Near Alto Springs Cemetery, submitted by Delores Oliver
