Archibald H. Hodge
Archibald H. Hodge, b March 8, 1851 in Fort Bend County, Texas, d March 28, 1928 in Kosse, Limestone County, Texas at the of his daughter, Mrs. Robert L. (Charlotte Hodge) Arnett, and was buried in Stranger Cemetery - was a son of Abner H. Hodge, b 1819 in Arkansas, d January 3, 1860 in Fort Bend County, Texas and buried by his wife, Elba (Rose) Hodge, b 1838 Mississippi, d March 29, 1854 in Fort Bend County, Texas and buried in Hodge's Bend Cemetery. Elba's father was deceased before 1850, and her mother, Margaret Rose, b 1795 in Kentucky, lived with her daughter. Archibald Hodge was the fifth son of his parents, and his older brothers were: Thomas J., Ed- ward W., Granville, and E. Vernon Hodge. When the father died nine years later, Archibald was sent to Stranger in Falls County to live with his aunt, Cynthia (Hodge) Roberts Moffett, and it was in that community that he lived until he became elderly.In about 1874, Arch was married to Mary E. Sears, b April 12, 1856 in Georgia, d October 5, 1935 in Kosse - a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vance Sears, who came to Texas after the Civil War. Arch and Mary built a one and a half miles southwest of the Stranger Store, overlooking the beautiful Big Creek Valley. Arch was a farmer and stockraiser. He and Mary (called "Mollie") reared four children:
Abner Harris Hodge, b December 14, 1875 at Stranger, d June 3, 1942 in Marlin and buried at Stranger Cemetery - married Ruth Williams, b in Blue Ridge, Falls County, Texas, d in Marlin, Texas and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery by her parents -James W. and Ara (Millerman) Williams. Abner bought a ranch near Bald Hill in Falls County, and it was here that he
and Ruth reared three daughters, Laura Glass, Lucille Lane, and Letha Faye Peevy. After Abner's death, Ruth sold the ranch, bought a boarding house in Marlin - serving delicious meals to a large clientele. Later, she married second to Paul Joshua Norman, and they continued to reside in Marlin.
Elba Hodge, b September 1877 in Stranger - married Lewis B. Kelley, b July 1867 in Tennessee. They lived in Kosse, Limestone County, Texas and had a daughter, Enja Kelly, b March 1896. No further information.
Milton Hodge, b March 4, 1880, d January 23, 1918 and buried in Stranger Cemetery - married Ethel Brothers, b September 1, 1885 at Stranger, d May 19, 1970 in Marlin, Texas - a daughter of Taylor Franklin and Lenora E. (Pool) Brothers. Milton was a carpenter, and Ethel taught school until she retired to Marlin. She never remarried.
Charlotte (called "Lottie") Hodge, b August 1882 at Stranger - married October 28, 1906 in Falls County, Texas to Robert L. Arnett - a son of James Hansford and Phoebe (Somerville) Arnett, early settlers of Stranger. They moved to Kosse, Limestone County, Texas, and it was in their that the parents died. Arch had sold his farm on January 17, 1910 to Tom S. Swinnea.
About 1920, Arch's eldest brother, Thomas J. Hodge, b June 6, 1842, came to Stranger from Sugarland, Texas, d July 16, 1922 and buried in the Hodge Family Plot in the Stranger Cemetery.
