David Mitchell Currie

The father died in North Carolina in 1854, and by 1860, the mother had brought her eight'children to Colorado County, Texas - subsequently settling in Durango, Falls County, Texas by 1870.
It was in Colorado County that David enlisted in 1861 in Company B, 5th Infantry, Hood's Brigade, Whiting's Division, Longstreet's Corps, A.N.V. Army of the Confederate States Army. In Falls County, David was a member of the Confederate Veterans' Association. Before 1870, David Mitchell Currie had moved to Falls County with his mother and siblings, where he bought land and lived the remainder of his life. They were of the Presbyterian faith, and members of the Carolina Presbyterian Church - later transferring their membership to the First Presbyterian Church at Lott, Texas.
On January 20, 1873 in Falls County, Texas, David was married to Ira A. lone White, b September 10, 1850 in Alabama, d March 10, 1890 at Durango and buried in Carolina Cemetery - a daughter of Frierson and Mary A. (Storey) White, and granddaughter of Anthony and Margaret (Means) Storey, who came to Texas ca 1851.
David was a farmer and rancher, a leader in the Durango Community, who believed in the pursuit of education - evidenced by the fact that his children received college educations, becoming prominent in their professions as doctors, theologians, teachers, and suc cessful ranchers.
David and lone Currie had nine children:
James Currie, b December 10, 1873 at Durango, d August 28, 1958 and buried in Carolina Cemetery. James was a farmer at Durango, and was never married.
Reese Frierson Currie, M. D., b ca 1875 in Durango, was a First Lieutenant medical officer and consuIting physician in the various A.E.F. ca of 1918-1919, in France. In 1958, Dr. Currie's place of residence was Austin, Texas.
Mary Ann Currie, b January 17, 1877, d January 17, 1877, d January 1, 1963 -- married in 1901 in Falls County, Texas to James Benjamin Tomlinson, b b July 25, 1877, d December 29, 1959 at Lott, Texas and both buried in Clover Hill Cemetery in Lott.
Thomas White Currie, D.D., b 1879, was a Presbyterian Minister and became President of Austin Seminary in Austin, Texas. He married and had a son, Thomas White Currie, Jr., D.D., who has been Pastor of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas for many years, and he is active in the research of historic records of the Presbyterian Church. No further information.
Martha Ada Currie, b February 5, 1881 at Durango, d October 26, 1966 at Lott - married June 9, 1915 by her brother, Dr. Thomas W. Currie of Austin, to Joseph A. McCreary, b October 22, 1871 in Falls County, Texas, d February 5, 1955 in Lott and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott - a son of Joseph S. McCreary, b January 6,1846, d August 4, 1898, and his wife, Sarah F. McCreary, b March 15, 1850, d January 14, 1923 in Lott - and both buried in Clover Hill Cemetery.
Julia Alice Currie, b 1883 at Durango, d 1962 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - married in 1901 to Thomas Burroughs Stallworth, b October 22, 1876, d 1918 - a son of Francis Marion and Rebecca (Burroughs) Stallworth, and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin.
William Theodore Currie, b February 5, 1885 at Durango, d August 5, 1954 at Durango - married Jennie Hester and had one son; married second to Lillie Ocker, and had no children.
Bettie Ira Currie, b April 4, 1887, dafter 1958 married in 1914 to David M. Howard, a pharmacist of Devine, Texas, and had David Currie Howard, b June 20, 1915; James Kenneth Howard, b December 12, 1916; Helen Howard, b December 18, 1919; and Woods Abernathy Howard, b 1921.
David Eugene Currie, b January 5,1889 at Durango, d January 1, 1955 and buried in Carolina Cemetery - served in the Commissary Department of the A.E.F., in France during World. War 1. "Eugene" was with the 82nd Division on the Marne Front at St. Mihiel and the Argonne. He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church at Lott, serving as its cartaker and bell ringer on Sunday mornings. He was never married.
After lone's death, David Mitchell Currie was married second to Irene Morgan, b December 20, 1868 n Tennessee, d November 8, 1931 in a Temple HospiaI, Bell County, Texas, following surgery, and buried n Carolina Cemetery - a daughter of John M. Moran, b January 16, 1834 in North Carolina, d Decemer 28, 1910 at Lott, and his wife, Laura (Nickerson) Morgan, b January 6, 1840, d February 16, 1920, and ) both buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott.
David and Irene Currie were the parents of five children:
John Morgan Currie, b ca 1895, d September 12, 1918 in France while serving with the U.S. Army in )rld War 1. He had entered Austin College in 1913, d was in his senior year at the onset of the war. He left school for Officers' Training Camp at Leon Springs, and was granted his B.A. degree and a commission as a Second Lieutenant. He was shipped to France with the Rainbow Division, Company M, 168th Infantry. He distinguished himselffor bravery and gallantry on the field of battle, and was awarded the French Citation, the Croix de Guerre. He was twice wounded, promoted to First Lieutenant, and died while leading his men in battle.
Ruth Currie, born and died in 1897, and buried in Carolina Cemetery.
Joseph S. Currie, b February 28, 1899, d June 23, 1900, and buried in Carolina Cemetery.
Sarah Currie, b July 29, 1901 in Durango, d January 20, 1972 - married May 14, 1929 to Trent Attison Phillips, b May 17, 1896, d 1985 and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott. Sarah earned a degree in Education, and was employed in the Lott Independent School District until her retirement. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, the Aurora Study Club, and other civic projects. Trent was a farmer and rancher at Durango, and they lived in the old family home. Their infant children did not survive, and they adopted a son and a daughter, James Currie Phillips (called "Jamie"), who married Miss Henning and lives in Durango; and Judy Phillips - no information.
Robert Lee Currie, M.D., b ca 1903 - was a physician in Houston, Texas in 1931; but had moved to Sallisaw, Oklahoma, by 1958. No further information.
