In 1881, George and Ellisay CLARK and their first five children cam by train from Mississippi to Calvert, Robertson County, Texas and then on to Baileyville to join George's brother, William Alvin CLARK and his wife - a sister of Ellisay (DEAN) CLARK. They lived in Baileyville until 1890 when they purchased a farm three miles east of Rosebud on present day FM1948. They built a large farmhouse and other appropriate outbuildings for livestock, machine and grain storage, and small houses for tenants. During his lifetime, Mr. CLARK purchased more land and also acquired real estate in Rosebud - including part ownership of the Farmers Gin Company; however, his main interest was farming cotton and grain. He lived in Falls County at a time of rapid growth, and was instrumental in that growth. He was a Democrat, a Methodist, and was interested always in civic and economic affairs.
Ellisay (DEAN) CLARK was a wide reader - reading everything from the Texas Almanac to daily newspapers and farm publications. She was also interested in politics and the Democratic Party. She was an excellent cook, known in the community for her culinary ability. She passed her art of cooking on to her descendants who are cooking as she taught them even today.
January 29th was always a special day for the Rosebud, Texas CLARKS, as it was the wedding anniversary of George and Ellisay, and two of their sons were also born on that date. ON the occasion of their fiftieth Anniversary, the children and grandchildren of George and Ellisay CLARK joined them in a grand celebration - presenting George with an ebony, fold handled cane, and Ellisay with a gold handled umbrella - each appropriately engraved with their names and dates.
After the death of George Washington CLARK, Jr. in 1924, Mrs. CLARK continued to operate her farm and lived on her place until her death in 1940.
