Neil Dugald Buie, Jr.
Neil Dugald Buie, Jr., M.D., b May 6,1918 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - was a son of Dr. Neil Dugald and Mrs. Marian (Clarkson) Buie. Graduating from Marlin High School, Neil Jr. received his B.A. degree from The University of Texas in 1939, and his medical degree from the Univerity of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1943. He completed his intern- ship at Charity hospital, New Orleans, Louisiana in 1944, followed by a residency at the Huey P. Long Charity Hospital, Pineville, Louisiana. After serving as a Physician in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Neil Jr. returned to Marlin in 1946, where he practiced internal medicine and rheumatology at Buie Clinic and Hospital for the next twenty years.On February 7, 1948, Dr. Buie married Clarita Fonville of Houston, Texas - a daughter of one of the city's former mayors. They made their in Marlin until 1966; and Dr. Buie served as president of Marlin Rotary Club, Falls County Medical Society, Marlin Country Club, Marlin Chamber of Commerce, the Twelfth District Medical Society, the Private Clinic and Hospital Association, and the American Spa Association.
They had four children:
Marian Clarkson Buie III; Neil Dugald Buie III; Anna Clare Buie; and Richard Fonville Buie. Marian works in Baytown, Texas, Neil III entered the construction business in Austin, Texas after attending The University of Texas in 1974, earned a B.A. degree in 1975, and then pursued a Ph.D. degree there in Clinical Psychology. Richard studied at Alvin College toward a career in the health care field.
Dr. Neil and Clarita Buie, Jr. moved to Houston in 1966, where he began a residency in psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. He completed two years of general psychiatry training, followed by a two-year residency in child psychiatry, and is now in private practice in Houston.
Dr. Buie is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child Psychiatry, the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry, the Harris County Medical Society, the Houston Psychiatric Society, the Texas Academy of Child Psychiatry, and the Texas Medical Association. He is also an assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine.
A ruling Elder of the Presbyterian Church, he has served in that capacity at both the First Presbyterian Church of Marlin, and the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church of Houston.
After the family's move to Houston, Mrs. Buie worked as a public relations officer at First City National Bank of Houston, for four years. A Phi Betta Kappa graduate of The University of Texas, Austin, Clarita taught creative writing and has done freelance work for The Houston Post as well as local, state, and national magazines. She also served as Executive editor of Travelog - an international travel magazine.
The Buies continue to have farming and ranching interests in Falls County, Texas, and they return often to participate in the activities of Marlin.
