Spencer Allen

Spencer Allen, b 1836 in New Jersey, d March 19, 1922 at Golinda in Falls County, Texas. In 1859 in Hanover, Ohio he married Caroline Thomas, bh 1837 in Virginia--a daughter of Robert and Kitty (Blieubeau) Thomas. The family remained in Ohio during the Civil War, where five of their eight children were born. They removed from Ohio to Mitz, Missouri, where they lived over decade, to more children were born; and by 1884, they had moved again and resided in Golida, Falls County, Texas, where their eighth and youngest child was born.

Spencer All had been a potter and farmer in Ohio, and practiced the latter trade at Golinda. He died at Golinda, and was buried in the Harris Cemetery at Rosenthal. When Caroline (Thomas) Allen died in 1926, she was buried by her husband. The children of Spencer and Caroline (Thomas) Allen were:

Mary Alice Allen, b January 28, 1860, d June 1, 1939--married Daniel E. Wooley; Samuel Allen, b August 3, 1862, d April 25, 1939--married Alice M. Wade; Frank Allen, b 1863, d ca 1928; William Allen, b 1864, d August 18, 1932--married Amanda Watkins; Minnie Sue, b June 17, 1867, d April 5, 1945--married Edward Clark Farney; May Allen, b ca 1870 in Missouri, d ca 1938; Dora Ann Allen, b May 1880, d 1969--married a Mr. Hood; Ada Allen, b ca 1886 at Golinda, Falls County, Texas, d ca 1912--married a Mr. Brewer.
Lea Ernest Allen, b November 23, 1866 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, d May 16, 1934 in Brenham, Texas and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin--was a son of John Willaim Allen (1837-1919) and his wife, Mary Hamilton (McCain) Allen (1847-1933).

On November 19, 1897 Lea married Irene Irma Jones, b June 30, 1873 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, d May 24, 1954 in Marlin an dburied in Calvary Cemetery--a daughter of William Henry Harrison Jones (1842-1912) and his wife, Octavia (Ripley) Jones (1848-1938). They were the parents of four children:

Irene Irma Allen, b August 7, 1879 in Marlin, d May 31, 1931--married June 29, 1922 to Daniel Hardeman Searight.

Lea Ernest Allen, Jr., b November 13, 1900 in Marlin, d March 18, 1960.

Octavia Lillian Allen, b December 3, 1903 in Marlin--married September 17, 1827 to Henry David Rush.

Anna Paul Allen, b November 11, 1910 in Marlin, d October 9, 1961--married May 4, 1935 to Howard G. Hartzog.

Lea Ernest Allen was an 1887 graduate of Texas A&M Collge--earning the highest grade in mathematics earned from that institution to that time. After graduation, he worked as a bookkeeper for Nash-Robinson Lumber Company in Marlin, until he and his family moved tyo Llama, Texsa in 1908, where Lea Ernest became manager of a lumber company there. A few years later, the family returned to Marlin, where Lea purchased a drug store, the "Allen City Drug Company," Subsequently, he became a wool buyer for central Texas.

Mr. Allen was an interested spectator in all sports--following the activities of Texas A&M, Marlin High School teams, and the New York Giants. He was one the first presidents of the Elks Club--forrunners of the local Rotary Club.
