The purpose of these Eddy area school webpages is to present, through
photographs, a visual history of the early schools that existed in both the Eddy
and Bruceville areas, from the late 1800's thru the mid 1950's, and to provide
the viewer with photos of some of the students, teachers, and faculty that made
up the population of these schools. Also represented on these pages, are early
photos of the school buildings and adjoining structures that were present at
each of these school sites. All of these schools were actually located in
McLennan County, Texas, but a large number of the students attending them lived
in nearby Falls County.
The effort to locate and document
early photos and details about these schools is an ongoing effort and the
contents of this page represent a work-in-progress. As in any type of research,
it is critical that the information presented is as accurate as possible. With
that in mind, I would encourage anyone who has additional information about any
or all of the schools identified here, to contact Falls
County Coordinator
at the Falls Co. website. This also applies to any errors that are detected in
the material presented on this webpage.-rlh
EDDY HIGH SCHOOL
1913 - 1939
In the early 1880's, there was a chapel located on the Dunning Ranch, just
northwest of Eddy, known as the Sage Chapel. Around 1881, this building was
moved into Eddy, onto property owned by J. R. Laughlin, across from the Eddy
Masonic Lodge. This structure initially served as the home of the Eddy Baptist
Church, until around 1885, at which time it became the first public school in
Eddy. This building burned down prior to 1910 and was replaced by a 6-room frame
structure that would serve as the Eddy school until a new school was built in
1913.
In 1913, construction began on a
two-story brick building that would become the new Eddy High School. The new
building was built on property believed to have been purchased from Jeff
Kincannon of Eddy. This property was located just off what was then called the
Eddy-Moody highway, a few blocks away from where the old Eddy High School frame
structure had been located. This structure was in use until around 1940, at
which time the remaining elementary grades relocated to the new Bruceville-Eddy
consolidated school.

Sage Chapel School | Sage Chapel was built on the Dunning ranch, about halfway between the communities of Eddy and Moody, as a private chapel by a Mr. Sage, uncle of Mrs. Charles Dunning. The building was later moved into Eddy to serve as a meeting place for the Eddy Baptist Church. Later it became Eddy's first public school building. I believe this to be a picture of that building, as it looked while located on the Laughlin property in Eddy. | Robert L. Haddock |
