Blevins School James Madison Bedichek came to Texas in 1884 and settled at Blevins in Falls County where he taught school for four years. In 1885 he erected a story and half school at that place. In 1885 he moved to Mooresville, Texas and then to Eddy, Texas where he opened the Eddy Literary & Science Institute and/or the Bedichek School. This picture and the one below are the same picture. The one below is much larger to try and help you ID the people. The only person I have been able to identify is the little boy peaking around the back corner of the building who I have been told was Little Billy Shellings. If you know any names of these people, please let Falls County Coordinator know. |

I think it is interesting that the very first picture of the school on the Falls Co. site does not have the addition on the back. Compare with the later picture with all the kids even on stairs. | Odessa Pass Baylor

Photo of building
that was once the Blevins School. Taken sometime in the late 1980's. Note: The old Blevins School building was purchased at auction in the early 1960's by a local farmer. He moved the building to some property he was leasing between Blevins and Eddy and made it into a hay barn. Sometime in the early 1970's, when he retired from farming and moved to Waco, he sold the building to the family that had purchased the land where it resided and they converted it into a home. After this picture was taken, a porch and other improvements were added to the dwelling, and it is now impossible to tell that this was once a school building.-rlh |
