WINNIE OPHELIA DAVIS WARHOL
June 29, 1918 - June 17, 2006
Winnie Ophelia
Davis Warhol, LVN, was born to Gertrude Ophelia Dodgen and Harry W. Davis on
June 29, 1918, in Denton, and departed this life on June 17, 2006.
She grew up and
completed school in Lott, and after graduating high school, Winnie worked for
Dr. Chamberlain, a dentist, for a year. She then attended nursing school at
Torbett, Hutchings, Smith Memorial Hospital in Marlin, where she began her
life-long work in January 1942, with formal retirement in 1988. After
"retirement," Winnie continued to care for many local citizens.
On August 10,
1946, Winnie married Marion V. Warhol and continued working full-time in nursing
while helping Marion run a local cafe. Marion died in November 1998.
Winnie was
office nurse for Dr. Howard O. Smith from 1963 until his retirement from the
active practice of medicine in 1974, after which she cared for him until his
death in 1977. In May 1952, Winnie became a charter member of the Texas League
of Licensed Vocational Nurses. She held many offices in the organization,
including two terms as president of the state body. From 1960 until 1967, Winnie
was appointed by the governors and served two six-year terms on the Texas State
Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners. At the 22nd annual state convention in
1973, Winnie was honored as the Texas League of Vocational Nurses nurse of the
year.
Winnie enjoyed
many life-long friends in the area, including high school girlfriends Mary Sue
Martin and Bobbie Scott. She had a wonderful time at class reunions, especially
the 50th, attended by 27 of 34 graduates.
Her sister,
Bernice Kirkscey of Memphis, and nieces and nephews, Valerie Davis Larson,
Ronnie Joe and David Warhol, Jeannie Smith, David and Jerry Kirkscey, Kathy
Brant, Bobby Davis, Jimmy Dean Carter, Clinton Earl, Glen and Danny Screws, and
Dinah Beeson survive Winnie. She also leaves behind many friends and neighbors.
Visitation will
be Tuesday, June 20 from 6 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday,
10 a.m. at Adams Funeral in Marlin, with Rev. Julian Tyboroski officiating.
Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
