GRID PLAYER AT WEST
DIES IN FENCE MISHAP
CORSICANA (AP) -- A football played died at West in Central
Texas following a high school game Wednesday night when he leaned against a wire
fence which surrounded the playing field.
Witnesses said the fence appeared to be charged with electricity.
The youth was a 17-year-old negro, Charles T. Vernon, a senior at G. W. Carver
High School in Dawson.
The body was taken to Calhoun Funeral in Corsicana, where a spokesman gave this
account which he said had been obtained from witnesses.
The Vernon boy, his football uniform damp, leaned against the fence. When
he touched the fence he groaned and seemed to be held fast. Two other
persons tried to pull him free and received what they thought were strong
electrical shocks.
