STONE DEVOTED COUNTY AGENT
FREDERICKSBURG -- Charles A. Stone Sr. was a county agent for almost 25 years
and helped 4-H Club members raise champions, including two grand champion steers
of the San Antonio Livestock Show.
"Dad worked for the Extension Service for
Texas A&M for 24 years and after retiring became a cattleman for the next 24
years," said his son, David Stone of Fredericksburg.
Stone, a veteran of World War II, died
Friday. He was 77.
In 1947, Stone began working for the Texas
A&M University System Engineering Extension Service as a county agent.
"Dad helped the local 4-H clubs and advised
those involved in rural construction," his son said. "He enjoyed his
job because he enjoyed being around people and helping them."
Stone was assigned in Wharton County,
Bastrop County and finally, Gillespie County where he spent 22 of his years
before retiring in 1971 to raise cattle.
"Dad enjoyed selling and feeding cattle and
did so for over 20 years," Stone said.
One of five children, Stone was born on
July 2, 1918, in Eddy.
In 1937, he graduated from high school and
went on to Texas A&M.
In 1941, he received a bachelor's degree in
animal science and later that year, married Virginia Curd. They had two
sons.
"Dad was a loving family man and dear
father who was always there when we needed him," his son said.
In 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps and
served for three years, working with the ground crews.
After being discharged in 1945 as a master
sergeant, Stone returned and began working on a master's degree from Texas A&M
before working for the Extension Service.
"Dad was a very honest and sincere person,"
his son said. "He also was a very driving and determined person as well."
He instilled this determination into many
of his 4-H Club members and gained a reputation for Gillespie County youth being
able to raise and show champion steers, lambs and Angora goats.
Stone was a member of the Fredericksburg
Lions Club, the Gillespie County Fair Association, the Farmers Student
Association of Texas A&M University, the Extension Farmer Agents Association and
the Texas Cattle Feeders Association.
His hobbies included working outdoors,
working with horses, fishing and hunting.
Other survivors included his wife of 53
years, Virginia Stone of Fredericksburg; another son, Charles Stone Jr. of
Fredericksburg; three sisters, Geneva Marshal of Kingsville, Edna Heyman of
Houston and Lina Criswell of New Mexico; and a brother, Clois Stone of
Gatesville.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at
the Schaetter Funeral in Fredericksburg.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday
at the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Lacy
officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
