-----
Silas Griggsby living on
R. J. Garrett's farm near Stranger was shot to death Saturday night by Aaron
Thomas, also a Negro.
The killing was the result of a trouble of
several weeks standing between the parties starting over some trivial matter.
The fight that lead to the killing began
between Griggsby and Alex Payne a half brother of Aaron Thomas. Griggsby
fired two shots at Payne and snapped his pistol a third time. Payne fled
from the scene. Thomas, who lived near by, was attracted by the row and
came down with his shotgun. One barrel of the gun was emptied into
Griggsby's anatomy, near the heart at close range, and death was instantaneous.
Justice J. S. Hayes held an inquest over
the remains of Griggsby and rendered a verdict in accordance with the facts
above stated.
