William
Marcus Criswell, age 60, succumbed to a fatal heart attack at his here, 411 Gift
Street, about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 1958. He performed his
duties as assistant cashier at the First State Bank until the usual Saturday
noon closing hour and during the afternoon he had bee on the school campus
awhile withs (sic) his son and other youth where he was coaching their ball
practice.
Mrs. Criswell said that her husband was
seated in the living room where he suddenly collapsed and was pronounced dead
when medical attention arrived. He had been in ill health about five years
with a heart ailment.
Mr. Criswell was born in the Criswell
community of Falls County, on January 21, 1898, a son of Mr. and Mrs. T. L.
Criswell. His wife was formerly Miss Lucy Roller of Celina, Texas, they
were married on November 25, 1926, at Waco, and had resided in Marlin ever
since.
Mr. Criswell was a graduate of Marlin High
School and attended Baylor University; he was a veteran of World War I, and was
a deacon of the First Baptist Church and was active in church affairs. He
had served for a long time as a local Boy Scout official and interested in youth
programs.
In earlier days he had worked here for the
Oltorf and Kyser Grocery and Bakkery (sic), for about 38 years years his
activities were in banking connections, first with the First State Bank, then
the First
National Bank as cashier, then awhile as a clerk in the Marlin post office, and
as bookkeeper awhile with the Langford Motor Company, and going to the First
State Bank again several years ago, where he served as assistant cashier up to
the time of his death.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.
Monday from the Adams Funeral chapel with Rev. Loyd Chapman officiating and
burial in Calvary Cemetery.
He is survived by his widow and one son,
13-year-old John Marcos Criswell, of Marlin; five sisters, Mrs. Clint Erskine of
Thornton, Mrs. John Moore and Mrs. Jay Saxon of Marlin, Mrs. Wyatt Jacobs of
Breckenridge, Mrs. Shelton Bresenhan of Austin.
The active pallbearers were Wiley Denard,
Wayne Graves, John Arney, Arthur Talley, Marvin Hayes and Morris Turner.
Honorary pallbearers included Lonnie Hicks, J. C. Fountain, Jr., Bill Hammer,
Dr. W. F. McKinley, Dr. A. C. Bennett and Vernon Jones.
