Lucille Barton
died June 5, 1999 in a Temple hospital. She was born Lucille Balsingame to
Jesse Marcus and Belle Goelzer Blasingame in Westphalia, Texas on August 27,
1909. In 1917, the family moved to McClanahan where she attended school
through eighth grade. She graduated from Marlin High School in 1927.
After graduation, she went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Marlin.
She was Chief operator when she retired after 35 years of service. Mrs.
Barton enjoyed her friends and coworkers at SWB and was very proud to be one of
the "telephone girls." On November 11, 1933, she married John V. Barton,
her childhood sweetheart. The couple made their in Marlin where Mr.
Barton was employed as Director of Public Works by the City for 45 years.
They also farmed and ranched at McClanahan. During the course of her life,
Mrs. Barton was active in the Marlin Civic Club, Sewing Club, Art League, and
was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marlin. She enjoyed oil
painting, sewing, crocheting, and various arts and crafts. Mrs. Barton was
an avid bird watcher and loved spending time in her yard among her flowers.
For the last two years, Mrs. Barton had been living in Troy, Texas near her
daughter's family. She took part in various activities for seniors in the
community.
Mrs. Barton is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Johnnie Lou and Michael
Husted; three grandchildren, Jenna, Mathew, and Meredity Husted; two sisters,
Ruby Denena, Marlin, and Frances Scheef of Houston.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Frances Barton, her husband, John
V. Barton, and her four brothers, Quintus, Homer, Marcus "Pat" and Walter
Balsingame.
Services were held Tuesday, June 8, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral in
Marlin with Pastor Andy Bratcher officiating. Burial will be in Calvery
(sic) Cemetery.
