Henrietta (Terrell) Burkes
Henrietta Terrell Burkes, 101, of Chapel Hill, South Carolina and formerly of Milam County, died March 8, 2007 in a nursing facility in Chapel Hill, South Carolina. She was cremated. Burial in Rosebud will be delayed until her son, E. Jefferson Burkes, of Pittsboro, North Carolina recovers from a grave illness.
Burkes was born in 1905 in Merit, the eldest of five children, born to Burl Toliver Terrell and his wife, Mary Swift. She earned both a bachelor's and master's degrees from Baylor University. She taught in Falls County before moving to Cameron in 1940. She was a public school teacher in Cameron, Buckholts, Rockdale, Branchville and Walker's Creek for 45 years. She married Ernest J. Burkes, who passed away in 1989. Ernest Burkes and J. Max Howard, of Belton, owned dealerships in Cameron for International Harvester farm equipment, General Electric and Clevrolet. Mr. and Mrs. Brukes moved to Chapel Hill in 1972 where she continued to substitute teach until 1987.
She is survived by son, E. Jefferson Burkes and wife, Joanne, of Pittsboro, N.C.; granddaughter, Beth Burkes of Kansas City, Mo.; grandson, Brian Burkes and wife, Anne, of Greenwood, S.C.; sister-in-law, Rowena Burkes Howard and husband, J. max Howard, of Belton.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Henrietta Burkes Teachers Award Fund in Milam County Community Foundation, 707 E. 16th Street, Cameron, Texas 76520.

Graveside services for Henrietta Terrell Burkes, 101, of Chapel Hill, S.C. were held Saturday, November 10 in Woodland Cemetery in Rosebud with the Rev. Wayne Shuffield officiating.
Mrs. Burkes died Thursday, November 8, 2007, in Chapel Hill.
She was born in Merit to Burl Toliver Terrell and Mary Swift. She was a teacher in Falls County before moving to Cameron in 1940. She was a schoolteacher in Cameron, Buckholts, Rockdale, Branchville and Walker's Creek. She married Ernest Burkes who preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, E. Jefferson Burkes of Pittsboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
