BOWERS.
In the death of
George Bowers Adams county loses one of her oldest citizens and a citizen who
was permitted to travel in married relation for over sixty-four years with the
wife who survives him, an allotment of time injoyed (sic) by but few. The
subject of this sketch was born in Davidson county, N. C., June 1, 1825, and
died at his in Nodaway township at 11:15 a.m., last Tuesday of paralysis of
which he had been a sufferer for two years, the past two weeks being
unconscious, aged 83 years, 8 months and 22 days. He was married in
Davidson county, N. C., Nov. 11, 1844, to Miss Susanna Shuler, who survives him.
They continued to reside in Davidson county until 1849 when they moved to near
Oxford, Miss., where they resided for a short time when they came to Schuyler
county, Ill., where they resided until their removal to Adams county in April,
1866, settling on the farm where the death occurred. To this union were
born eight children, they being Mrs. H. D. Dorsett of Augusta, Ill.; F. W.
Bowers who died at Nodaway Oct. 28, 1901; Mrs. James White of Villisca; John H.
Bowers of Nodaway; Mrs. Geo. Lacock of Villisca; Mrs. P. M. McClelland who died
at Nodaway Jan. 5, 1898; Mrs. F. L. Parcher of Presho, S. D., and Geo. H. Bowers
who resides on the old place. Besides the aged wife and children he
leaves 35 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a large circle of friends.
Mr. Bowers united with the Presbyterian church a number of years ago and
remained a faithful member until the end. The funeral was from the Mt.
Zion Presbyterian church on Thursday at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. J. K. Driver
of Villisca. Interment in the Methodist Grove cemetery.
