"The Beginning and the End," was the subject of the initial
sermon of Rev. H. L. Munger's pastorate of the First Methodist church at Marlin
Sunday.
"Jesus comprehends everything," Rev. Munger told his hearers, "from Alpha to
Omega--A to Z--the scriptural reference reminding us that everything is embraced
in the alphabet.
"Jesus sought to achieve something worthwhile. It was Jesus who first
brought the world the real meaning of love.
"In the human heart, there is a hunger for heaven, a yearning for a hereafter.
And if there is no heaven, there is nothing to live for."
Rev. Munger was appreciative of the opportunity afforded him by his residence to
renew associations of other days. Two of his former school teachers, he
said, were in the congregation, H. J. McIlhany, superintendent of the Marlin
schools, and Dr. J. W. Torbett, chairman of the board of stewarts of the First
Methodist church. He also recalled pleasantly his days at Southwestern
University of Georgetown, where his brother, Dr. S. S. Munger of Marlin, is a
member of the Methodist choir.
The new pastor was presented to the congregation by Rev. E. L. Ingrum, presiding
elder of the Marlin Methodist district. Rev. Munger paid tribute to
outstanding pastors of the church who had preceded him in the pulpit of the
Marlin church.
At the evening hour, Rev. Munger spoke on "the Spirit of Christ." No
services were held Sunday night at the First Baptist and First Presbyterian
churches in order that members of these congregations might join in welcoming
the new Methodist pastor to Marlin.
