BELFALLS RESIDENT MEETS
TRAGIC DEATH NEAR TROY
Body Found Propped Against A Tree
With Gunshot Wound
In Head
Temple, Texas, Nov 5 -- An inquest verdict of murder was returned
Wednesday in the death of R. E. Garrett, 56-year-old blackmith of Belfalls.
Two small boys found Garrett's body propped against a tree on the banks of Big
Elm creek near Troy. He was unconscious when found and died three hours
later at his home.
A pistol was found on the ground beside Garrett but there were no powder burns
about his hair or clothing. He had been shot in the head.
Relatives could give no motive for his slaying, but told of previous attempts to
injure him. Officers were told two unknown men in an automobile recently
tried to run over Garrett, but missed him. Later a note was found on the
door of his reading, "We'll get you next time."
Coroner T. M. Atkerson believed Garrett was murdered as he walked from Troy
toward his home, seven miles away.
