FORMER MARLIN RESIDENT
PAID HONOR IN FLORIDA
Receives American Legion Distinguished
Service Award in Lake City.
Rev. E. F. Montgomery, son of Rev. J. A. Montgomery, a former
Presbyterian pastor of Marlin was recipient of the 1931 "Distinguished Service
Award" for outstanding citizenship of the year, presented by the American Legion
at Lake City, Fla., recently.
The award, the first such ever presented at Lake City, is designed to honor
outstanding citizens of peace time just as the nation's heroes of the
battlefield are singled out for recognition during war, it is explained.
The citation accompanying the award to Montgomery, who spent his boyhood days in
Marlin reads:
"Because of his constant endeavor to be of service to the citizens of Lake City.
"Because of his work with and for the young people of this community.
"Because of his incomparable example of high standards of living, honesty of
purpose and devotion of duty, he has builded into the lives of all the boys and
girls, with whom he has come in contact, a most wholesome respect for and a
knowledge of the principles of honesty, fair play, courage, leadership and
service, thereby laying the foundation for the highest and noblest type of
citizenship."
