on Receiving Place
of Honor.

"The citizens
of Marlin and Falls county whenever they go to Paris will find a cordial welcome
in Pershing Hall and I know it will give each who goes a thrill of pride to see
their state and county represented in a place of honor in this great was
memorial in the lasting likeness of its distinguished soldier of Texas," states
a communication regarding the movement sponsored by Falls county Post No. 31
American Legion whereby citizens of Marlin contributed $100 for placing a
permanent portrait of Dan Edwards, world war hero, in the hall.
The letter comes from Col. Frances E. Drake, president of "Pershing Hall,
America's memorial to the commander in chief, officers and men of the A. E. F.,
under construction 49 American Legion Building, Paris, Inc.," with headquarters
at 305 Hall of Records, New York.
Laurence V. Benet is vice president while such well known names appear on the
letterhead of the organization as sponsors as Cornelius Vanderbilt, George
Arents, Otto H. Hahn, George Eastman, F. Trubee Davidson, John Hays Hammond,
Ogden L. Mills, Dwight F. Davis, James G. Harboard, Lawrence C. Phipps,
Walter E. Frew, John D. Ryan, Charles P. Summerall, John A. Lejune, Mrs.
Marius de Brabant, W. W. Clark, Jr.
In response to a letter advising that Marlin would consider it an honor to
supply the funds, the communication from Col. Drake says:
"It is a source of satisfaction to us to know that the feeling Col. Edwards
has for his old town is shared by its citizens. The patriotic spirit shown in
thus honoring your distinguished son will reflect lasting credit upon the people
to your community."
Subsequent to the writing of the above letter, which is dated May 25 the fund
was raised in a short time after the opportunity was presented by the American
Legion committee and a check for $100 was dispatched by air mail to New York
City.
