TO ENLARGE WATERWORKS DAM
-----
Mayor Submits an Opinion as to
Aldermen's Pay.
-----
The city council will enlarge and strengthen the dam now in course of
construction for the new water supply northwest of town. That was decided
upon at a meeting of the body today. Aldermen Sanders, Rush and Reeves
were appointed a committee to let the contract for the work which is to be done
at once.
The mayor touched on a matter that has
agitated the minds of some of the aldermen and citizens for some time when he
laid before the council an opinion from City Attorney Jones to the effect that
no alderman had the legal right to perform any work for the city and receive pay
therefor, other than the regular per diem allowed. The opinion was brought
about by reason of the fact that two of the aldermen had been in the employ of
the city in connection with the building of the dam for the extension water
works, they having been engaged in a supervisory capacity. The council
took no action on the opinion of the city attorney, further than an informal
discussion.
The council transacted nothing of
importance beyond routine business and adjourned at 12 o'clock.
