RACE HORSES BURNED TO DEATH.
-----
Diamond G. and Hawthorn Meet
Death at Bremond.
-----
Two of the fast runners that raced on the local track during the fair last week,
were burned to death in a freight car at Bremond Tuesday. Diamond G. owned
by Alex Hughes, and Hawthorn, owned by J. Martin, were being shipped to Dallas
at the time they lost their lives in the car that burned.
One of the men, who made an unsuccessful
attempt to get the animals out of danger, received bad burn on his arm.
The horses were winners of purses in the
contests here and were played as favorites on the board. The pony,
Hawthorn, was one of the best bred horeses that participated in the races.
Their owners valued them highly and they had many admirers among the racing
element.
The fire was caused from a gasoline stove
used in the car which exploded and started the fire that could not be
extinguished in time to save the animals.
