PENSIONS AND ROAD MATTERS.
-----
Commissioners Court Has a Busy
Special Session.
-----
The
Commissioners court completed a very busy special session Tuesday afternoon.
The session was called primarily for canvassing the returns of the school
trustee election that was held on April 6, but there was much outside of that
formality to demand the attention of the court.
There were
applications galore for pensions and each had a story to tell the court.
In some cases the applicant was successful; in several he was not. The
poor farm seems to be hoodoo and if the court should say much more about this
feature of caring for the indigent, the applications for pensions maybe
materially reduced.
The
following monthly pensions were granted: Mariah Smiley, $3.00; Louisa
Wesley, $3.00; Emily Scott, $3.00, Mrs. Cariker, $5.00 and Mrs. Wilson, $5.00;
John Wesley, $3.00.
John H.
Duggan and Mrs. Mathias, who have heretofore been on the roll, were
discontinued.
The court
devoted half a day to hearing the application for a new road near Westphalia.
The report of the jury of view was favorable to the road, but it was strenuously
opposed by some whose land was effected. Counsel was engaged by both
sides, witnesses examined and arguments made. The court rejected the
report of the jury of view and the application. It is probably that the
matter may come up again on another line of procedure.
The return
of the special school tax election held in Wilson district were canvassed.
The patrons refused to abrogate the special tax. Returns of school trustee
election wee canvassed and the results declared.
Marvin
Allen was allowed $100 for a glandered mule condemned by board of inspectors.
