MAY CLOSE DOWN THE COMPRESS
-----
Owners Claim It Will Be a Losing
Proposition.
-----
Owners of the compress that has been in operation here for four or five years
are considering the closing down of the same.
W.J. Neale and C. W. Lawson ef (sic) Waco,
who own a large block of the stock, arrived Monday afternoon to look into the
status of affairs. When seen by a reporter, Mr. Neale admitted that such
action was under advisement, but declined to say anything further for
publication.
It is learned from other sources that the
construction of a compress at Mart by the merchants there will seriously lessen
the patronage of the press here, as a very large potion of the cotton pressed
here comes from that point, one firm alone sending 6,000 bales last season.
There is some question as to the legal
right of the company to move or close down the press. The lot upon which
the compress is located, was donated to the compeny (sic) by the city and the
citiznes of Marlin as a bonus for locating the institution here. It is
claimed that it was a condition to the donation that the press would be operated
for a period of ten years. The existence of this provision is now under
investigation.
