Business League Holds an Important
and Interesting Meeting.
-----
The
following named gentlemen compose the directory of the Marlin Business League
for the year 1907. T A Cheeves, C B Monday, B C Nettles, I J Nathan, D R
Emerson, W H W Jones, George E. Sanders.
The
election of this directory took place at the meeting of the league Monday night
at the K. of P. hall. The meeting was well attended and the interest ran
high. The session was harmonious and marked throughout by a determination
to accomplish results not heretofore sought.
The
question of employing a secretary to devote his entire time to the interests of
the league and the objects promoted by it was discussed at length, and, while no
direct vote was taken on the proposition, it was the general sentiment that in
this manner alone could the aims and objects of the league be properly
accomplished.
By vote
the league decided that at least $3,000 should be raised for the year's work and
that the amount secured should be appropriated in equal parts for three
purposes, viz: General advertising, promotion of local trade, music.
The
sentiment was strong that Marlin should encourage her two principal trade
sources alike. That while the hot water interests should be pushed, that
her agricultural trade, the foundation of all, should by no means be neglected.
It was therefor (sic) decided to look after the question of roads and bridges,
local markets, etc. The details of these subjects were left to the wisdom
of the directors.
The
Juvenile band furnished enlivening music for the meeting and cigars were passed
at intervals. Thus the meeting was made an occasion for some entertainment
and pleasure as well as for business.
MINUTES OF THE MEETING.
Called to
order by President C. W. Adams, who stated the object of the meeting to hear the
final report for 1906 and for selection of a new board of directors. He
explained the handicap that the officers had encountered by reason of having no
paid secretary to answer correspondence, send out advertising matter, etc.
Secretary
Hoke read the report for 1906, published a few days since in the Democrat.
The report was received and filed and vote of thanks extended; the officers and
directors for their faithful performance of duty.
The league
then resolved itself into a general discussion and each and every member was
urged to express himself. Addresses were made by Geo. H. Carter, J. W.
Torbett, L.E. Allen, I. J. Nathan, W.H.W. Jones, C.W. Adams, J. P. Gardere, B.
F. Foster, J. W. Hoke and others. The speakers agreed that it was
necessary to have a paid secretary and to enlarge the scope of the work,
including our local trade, as well as our visitors' trade, and that neither
should be allowed to lag for want of encouragement.
A
committee composed of L. E. Allen, B. J. Linthicum and Geo. H. Carter, was
appointed to submit a list of names from whom directors were to be selected.
The committee reported the list and the directors were chosen.
The
president expressed the thanks of the league to the band for their music and a
resolution congratulating the juveniles on their proficiency and the city for
having within its borders such a creditable organization was adopted.
The motion
of L. E. Allen to prorate the amount collected equally to the three purposes,
advertising, promotion of local trade and music, was then put and carried.
Adjourned.
