Col. and Mrs. W. D. Gaines of Chilton, who
Recently Cele-
brated Their 60th Wedding Anniversary.
-----
William D. Gaines was born in Escambia county, Florida, October 10, 1824;
removed to Washington county, Alabama, at the age of 15; remained with his
parents until 21 years of age, after which he managed his father's farm for some
time. He was educated in common schools of the country.
In 1855 he moved to Mt. Sterling on Tombigbee river, about 35 miles east of
Meridian, where he engaged in stock raising, farming and saw mill business until
1874, when he moved to his in Chilton, where he has been for 33 years, spending
the closing years of his life. He is now 83 years old. He was
married to Elizabeth M., daughter of Capt. W. P. Spinks of Choctaw county,
Alabama, who was born December 9, 1820. She is now 78 years old.
They were married in Choctaw county, Alabama, November 25, 1847, they having
been married 60 years.
To this union has been born eleven children; eight are now living, three
deceased. They have now twenty grand children and twelve great grand
children now living.
Mr. Gaines is politically a democrat, having went (sic) through many hardships
to rid Falls county of radicalism in 1870 to 1875; socially is a Royal Arch
Mason, and religiously both he and his wife are members of the Baptist church of
long standing, in which he has been a deacon for many years. He was also
treasurer and moderator of the Waco Association.
Col. Gaines has been honored a number of times by the democracy of Falls county,
in which position he discharged his duty with fidelity to the public and credit
to himself.
It is the wish of hundreds of friends that he and his good wife may be spared
for many years yet.
