Bought It at "Old Hoss" Sale.
(Waco Star)
Zeke
Williams, a negro man who has long been a character about the town, portering
and acting in other capacities that would earn a little money, Sunday came as
near meeting the angel of death as one may well do and miss the mark. On
Saturday he was present at an "old hoss" sale of unclaimed express packages and
he bought one that seemed to take his eye. When opened the contents were
revealed as a bottle, the label of which indicated that it was occupied by "John
Barleycorn." Since the Baskin-McGregor law went into effect the seventh
day in the week has been drouthy, the extremity of which led Zeke to investigate
the contents of his prize package, with the result that he is now in the
Provident Sanitarium suffering from a case of poisoning. About noon, or
shortly thereafter, yesterday he staggered into the office of Dr. Haile seeking
relief from intense pain. Dr. Haile made an investigation and afforded
such relief as he could, then sent him out to the sanitarium. All indications
point to strychnine poisoning though an analysis of the contents of the bottle
have not yet been made. He was resting easy last night, and indications
point to his recovery.
