ANOTHER GOOD DAY'S RACING.
-----
Friday Drew Many People and Was
a Lively Day.
-----
The races on Friday proved to be the most interesting and exciting of any
yet witnessed on the local track. This was due to the fact that the horses
were about evenly matched and the success of each was hoped for by some fond
admirer.
The afternoon opened up with a free for all
trot with four entries, and no one could tell the result of this race until its
finish as each contestant for the purse had been the favorite at some one meet
in the circuit. Pay Girl, a four year old mare belonging to W. O. Foot,
won three successive heats and the race. Time 1:00 1-2, with King Airy
second. The winner in this race is a fine mare, without a mark, and was at
one time the property of J. W. Bailey, from whom the present owner obtained her.
In the 1-4 mile running race, the favorite
on the board, Nettie Harris, won; time 24 seconds. The popular Teddy
Roosevelt came second.
Between the running races a consolation
race was pulled off, in which horses that had not won any money on the previous
days were eligible. Nancy L., Ludie K. and Jim Patch composed the entries
and came under the wire in the order named. Time of winner 1:11.
When 4 1-2 furlong race was announced
betting picked up, for each was favored by some one. Bessie A., a fine
little pony belonging to C. Lockley, was listed among the entries and was being
played favorite on the boards, but was compelled to drop out of the race on
account of losing one of her shoes in an attempt to start. Diamond G. won:
time 57 1-2 seconds.
The mile running proved to be the most
interesting race of the afternoon, and with its results there were many
disappointed. Lillian Ayers was played favorite and showed evidence of
being the fastest animal in the race, but Hanthorn won. Time 1:52 1-2.
