FARMERS IN VICINITY
OF LIMESTONE AND THORNTON COUNTIES
~~~~~
Some farmers in the vicinity of
Thornton, in Limestone county, are reported to be in very straightened
circumstances, such is their condition as the reports published in state papers
indicate, that they are without the bare necessities of life and with no means
or credit to secure to them. The pests destroyed their cotton crop, and what
corn was made went to the man who held the mortgage. By reason of the failure of
the Oliver banks at Groesbeeck and Thornton the credit of the community has been
seriously impaired. all of which, it is said, has produced a very wretched
condition among some of the people. Subscriptions are being taken over the state
for the benefit of these people and forwarded to W. W. Sellars, chairman of the
relief committee at Thornton.
