BLOODY TRAGEDY IN TENNESSEE
Dayton, Tenn., Oct.
31.--A tragedy occurred last night, resulting in the killing of W. J. Cooley and
his son-in-law, Will Whitefield, by Manuel Thurman, a saloon keeper.
Whitefield was shot three times and died
immediately.
Cooley lingered until 6 o'clock this
morning and made a statement. This was to the effect that Cooley and
Whitefield were at Cooley's when Thurman entered the room occupied by Cooley's
daughter.
Whitefield heard the noise and entered the
room when Thurman grappled with him.
Cooley then entered and Thurman opened fire
with the result as stated.
Thruman surrendered to the sheriff.
Whitfield was an engineer for the Dayton Coal and Iron Company.
