SOME OLD PAPERS.
The Democrat has lately read some very old and very
interesting newspapers, through the courtesy of Mr. Will Ward, of this city, the
papers having been in the Ward family since their issue, forty years ago.
A copy of teh McKinney Messenger is among
them. This issue of the Messenger was printed on November 7, 1862 and
covers a sheet of paper about 15x20 inches.
There are no display advertisements in the
paper and the greater portion of its news columns were devoted to "News From the
Front." A railroad wreck in which 35 people were killed is reported in
four lines and ohter items are handled in pretty much the same way. The
messenger was published by Thomas & Darnell.
