ROAN GETS TEN

Governor Sayers Grants Further

Prisoner Spirited Away.

At nine o'clock and
thirty minutes Tuesday morning, Governor Joseph D. Sayers telephone Sheriff
Charles P. Carlton that he had granted John Roan a further reprieve of ten days.
This was confirmed later by wire and at ten
o'clock Sheriff Carlton and Deputy Sheriffs Bates and Tomlinson left the city
with the prisoner by a fast conveyance and he is now out of harm's way.
A large crowd had collected on the south
side of the jail in the court house yard and the prisoner was carried out
through the west door and through the servant's house by City Marshal Coleman
and Deputy Sheriff Bates to a conveyance in waiting near by and was on his way
to safety before many people knew (wh)at was going on.
(Missing) was little excitement (missing)
among the crowd, but low mutterings of disapproval at the governor's action and
some gave vent to their feelings in stronger terms than can be put in print.
The action of the sheriff in removing the
prisoner was only a precautionary move. There is little probability that a
successful attempt to rob him would be made had he remained, but the safest plan
was to remove him to another jail and the sheriff acted promptly.
When notified of the action of the
Governor, John showed no change in expression. He received the information
with that stolid indiference (sic) that has characterized him throughout, during
the trial and ever since.
The respite means that the case will be
fought out again before the Governor and it is certain it will excite a great
deal of interest. Some of the best citizens of Marlin and Falls county
believe that the sentence should be commuted while others just as good and
conscientious believe he ought to hang. The outcome will be awaited with
interest.
A synopsis of the evidence, as it appears
of record in the case is published today.
