Convention.

The county Republican
convention met in the court house Tuesday pursuant to a call from County
Chairman A. Z. Wheeler.
The first thing before the house was the
reading of the call by Secretery (sic) Simmons. To which several motions
werre put and discussed, pertaining to the legality of the organization.
On motion by H. Warren that five be elected on delegation. This motion was
ruled out of order. Several motions were injected, all pertaining to the
temporary organization. On motion by J A Anderson, that one member from
each voting precinct be appointed on credentials. In lieu of this, J H
Childs motioned that the present chairman be elected permanent. By which
this brought on a great deal of argument--all of this ended with a motion by Dr.
R.S.Childs, that the present incumbent, A Z Wheeler, be elected temporary
chairman, carried overwhelmingly. On motion of W O Bell that Prof. L. S
Simmons be elected secretary, carried. On motion by Dr R S Childs,
seconded by E J Moore, that a committee of five be appointed, J H Childs amended
by adding one from each precinct, which was accepted. Sec. Simmons was
added to this committee.
While out J Jackson, B M Burney and Dr R S
Childs made speeches which were received with applause.
The report of the credential committee was
adopted.
After which Dr R S Childs motioned that the
temporary organization be made permanent, carried.
On motion by J A Anderson that the chairman
appoint a committee of five on delegation, who were as follows: T L Sodas,
S H Martin, T B Broadus, J A Anderson, R S Shaw. After the committee had
retired the name of F C Baumann was called and the gentleman made his response.
On motion by Dr. R S Childs that a
committee of three be appointed on resolutions which was carried.
The following were appointed J H Childs, Wm
Banks and H Denson. While the committee was out F C Baumann made a short
talk which was applauded.
Rev. N. T. Denson was called upon, spoke in
his straight forward manner of speaking, and especially upon the point, when the
negro was debarred from the primaries.
B J Henry of McLennan Co. was then
introduced and made a talk.
The committee on delegation made their
report as follows:

We, your committee, recommend that the
delegates elected go to the convention, go uninstructed and vote as a unit.

After which on motion by Dr. Childs that
the committee's report be adopted this was arrested by several and brought about
much discussion, of which it was adopted.
J A Anderson made the report of committee
on conference and recommended that the chairman appoint a committee on
conference to confer as to making a ticket. On motion by W O Bell that the
same committee be continued, seconded by many, and several raised objection but
finally passed.
The convention then adjourned.
