Republican Mass
Meeting on March 29th, 1902.
To the Marlin Democrat: You will please accord us the favor to make a
statement, in the meantime give the minutes of the last Republican Mass Meeting.
As there seems to be some misunderstanding
as to the procedure, and for the benefit of the Republicans who were unable to
attend, I hereby publish the full proceedings of the said meeting,
Marlin, Texas, April 29, 1902:--
In lieu of a call made in a previous mass
meeting, the Republicans of Falls county assembled at the court house in Marlin
to accept the resignations of Hons. J. H. Childs and R. C. Shaw. You will
note here that Falls county Republicans have been in a factional fight since the
year of McKinley's first nomination and the seed of discored has been
continually cultivated. But the Republican chairman desiring to see the
party bury the factional hatchet, therefore mutually agreed to resign and leave
it to the Republican party of Falls county to elect another.
The meeting was called to order by Prof. J.
H. Childs after making a statement of the object of the meeting. He stated
that as he desired harmony and believing his party was greater than any one man
and whereas there had been dissention in the ranks, therefore he respectfully
tendered his resignation to take place instanster. Mr. Childs received
hearty applause.
At this junction repeated calls went up for
R. C. Shaw. Mr. Shaw prefaced his resignation in in (sic) a pointed, but
explicit talk, pointed to the same, that he desired peace, whereby the following
resignation was presented:
RESIGNATION.
To the
Republication Party of Falls County Texas:
On account of factional difficulties,
strife and confusion which have heretofore marred the power and influence of our
party and in order that harmony, peace and a strong concert of action may obtain
where unfortunately confusion and disorder have destroyed our efforts and in
order that we may turn our backs to the unfortunate past and our faces to a
promising future and all stand firmly together in the assertion of the
impertshible principles of a party more to be cherished than self agrandizment,
I hereby tender this, my resignation, of the chairmanship of the Republican
party of Falls county to take effect instanter, and in doing so acknowledge with
profound gradtitude the high honor which has so often been done me and pledge my
best efforts in the common cause.
R. C. Shaw,
Chmn. Rep. Party Falls Co.
J. A. Anderson motioned that the
resignations be accepted. Carried.
At this point a lively chase was made for
the chairmanship. F. Shaw motioned that J. Washington be elected to fill
the unexpired term. This motion was ruled out of order at the meeting had
to be temporarily organized. By which a motion prevailed to go into
temporary organization. H. Warren was elected sergeant at arms. The
lively pull came off when the nomination was opened. Wm. Bank's motion to
table the "meeting to go into temporar organization" and that we elect a man
from the floor. This motion was lost. Then came nominations.
Aaron Denson placed James Jackson in
nomination.
James Jackson placed J. Washington in
nomination.
H. Warren placed J. Washington in
nomination.
H. James placed Burrel Shaw in nomination.
T. L. Sodas placed T. Talor in nomination.
In this race T. Taylor, J. A. Anderson,
Burrel Shaw and James Jackson withdrew from the race, leaving A. Z. Wheeler and
J. Washington remaining. The vote was taken which resulted in A. S.
Wheeler being elected.
L. S. Simmons was elected secretary without
opposition.
On motion by J. H. Childs that the
temporary organization be made permanent.
Wm. Banks put the queston which brought
about yells for recognition, but with calmness he held them under control and
placed the question which threw the temporary organization permanet.
From beginning to end the meeting was
harmonious. The mass meeting was well attended by Republicans from all
over the county. Everp (sic) speech made was for harmony and it has been
years, since the entire party worked in h(armony) (with) out friction.
On motion by J. H. Ch(ilds) the chairman of
each prec(---) (missing)
organize. Carried.
Hon. A. Z. Wheeler in his (missing) of
acceptance assured the par(ty) that peace and harmony woudl reign supreme.
Prof. Wm. Banks, R. C. Shaw, J. Jackson and
many more spoke of the good that the Republican party had accomplished in coming
together.
