OPERA HOUSE PROPOSITION
Some weeks ago when it seemed that an
opera house for Marlin was all but a certainty the DEMOCRAT was requested to
treat the matter as an ordinary business enterprise, publishing no specific
information of the details of the proposition, until it had assumed some
tangible form so as to insure the success of the enterprise, when something
definite could be given out. For that reason nothing has appeared in these
columns recently on this all important subject.
However, it now develops that, although the gentlemen
at the head of the enterprise have secured some liberal subscriptions to the
capital stock, there yet remains unsubscribed nearly half of the amount required
to erect such a building as is desired and Marlin should have. As the time when
this matter should be closed up is rapidly drawing near, if next season's
business is considered, it behooves the citizens
of Marlin to be up and doing.
We take it that the importance of this enterprise, from
a stand-point of providing entertainment for the visitors as well as folks, as a
financial stimulus to the town and in the way of providing a public meeting
place for conventions that might be induced to come this way, is so patent to
all that further argument would be superflous.
We only desire to bespeak, for the three gentlemen who
will take this matter up again, a generous response and a liberal subscription
of stock. Remember, that while it may not pay as well as Standard Oil, though it
should pay a reasonable dividend, it will pay a heavy per cent in the way of
adding to the general pros perity of the community and that includes each and
all.
