THE OFFICIAL REPORT.
-----
I. & G. N. Officials Make Statement of the
Lewis Accident.
-----
The general office of the I & G N Railroad at Palestine has issued an official
report of the wreck at Lewis Junction, full report of which appeared in these
columns Tuesday. The statement is as follows:
"Passenger train No. 101, on the Fort Worth
division, and freight train No. 54, on the San Antonio division of the
International and Great Northern Railroad reached Lewis about the same time.
Both whistled for the crossing and stopped. Each then proceeded again.
The passenger crew supposed the freight train saw them and would remain
standing. When the engine of the freight train saw the passenger train on
the crossing he reversed the lever of his engine and did everything possible to
stop. The engineer of the passenger train in the meantime, taking in the
situation, made a desperate effort to get his train over the crossing just in
time to catch the hind end of the last passenger car and tilt it over."
It has been further stated that Howard and
Jupe, the two men who lost their lives, were standing on the platform of the car
and when they saw the freight train they jumped and the chair car was knocked
over on them, crushing out their lives.
