NEGRO STABS A WHITE MAN.
Last night
John T. Beckett, a cotton buyer of Waco, was severely cut in the neck by Bill
Bell, a negro.
Mr.
Beckett in company with John T. Brock, were passing down the street when they
passed the negro, who turned and charged the men with running over him.
His
assaults were repulsed by Mr. Beckett with an umbrella, but not until he had
received a very ugly wound.
Mr. Brock,
upon seeing that Beckett was cut, struck the negro with his knife and the negro
may die from the wound.
The
trouble occurred on Austin Avenue near the St. Charles restaurant.

The negro
Bill Bell, who did the cutting was brought to Marlin today at 2 o'clock by
Sheriff Baker and placed in jail here for safe keeping, to avoid the vengeance
of the friends of Mr. Beckett, who was gradually sinking at the time the train
