NEGRO TAKEN TO ALABAMA.
~~~~~
John Wesley Wanted For Killing
A White Man.
~~~~~
Deputy Sheriff W. H. Holt, of Wilcox
county, Alabama, left Marlin Sunday afternoon having in charge John Wesley, a
negro wanted in that county on a charge of killing a young white man named
Melton.
The arrest of Wesley was made by Deputy Sheriff Steen
at the poor farm near where the negro had been working since January.
The negro admits the killing but claims it was an
accident, as the result of a squabble in a crap game. Another negro who was in
the game was arrested and put in the callaboose which was burned down upon him
by a mob of infuriated friends of the man who was killed. The Wesley negro
doubtless has visions of cremation or hanging himself when his arrival in Wilcox
county. However, the officer who took the negro back, says he does not expect
any trouble of this kind.
The papers brought by the Alabama officer were regular
and Gov. Lanham honored the requisition promptly.
