NEGRO KILLED NEAR PERRY.
~~~~~
Was in the Act of Cutting White
Man.
~~~~~
John Belfry, a negro about 45 years
old, was shot and killed on the Oakes farm about 2 :30 Monday afternoon by Frank
Oakes.
The negro was a tennant on the farm and the trouble
that lead to the killing came up over some work the negro was doing. The
negro was in a wagon at the time and Mr. Oakes was on horseback. The negro
got out of the wagon and started for Frank with a knife in his hand.
Before he had reached Frank three shots rang out and the negro was a corpse
pretty soon. One bullet entered the neck and passed through the base of
the head, two others entered the body in vital parts but neither passed through.
When notified of the killing Judge Frazier, County
Attorney Carter, Deputy Sheriff Steen and W. C. Jones, Esq., went up to the
farm. Judge Frazier held an inquest, finding the knife clasped in the
right hand of the negro. Mr. Oakes waived examination and his bond was
fixed at $1000, which was readily given.
