WANTED TO LYNCH HIM.
-----
Mob Tried to Get a Houston Negro From the
Officers.
-----
Houston, Texas, Oct. 22.--Nothing but a riot call to the police department from
the judge prevented a negro from being taken from a court room in this city this
afternoon and lynched. Santa Montalbano, a 13-year old Italian girl, had
accused Will Carter, a negro, of criminal assault and he was having a hearing on
the charge. The girl told a story that enraged the people, and an effort
to get possession of the negro was held in check by the court officers until a
police force of sufficient strength reached the court room. The trial was
stopped by Judge Matthews, who ordered the prisoner to jail with out bail.
The jail is strongly guarded tonight. The girl swore in the court that the
negro entered her room before daylight and accomplished his purpose by repeated
assaults. Military protection may have to be invoked to save Carter from
lynching when his trial shall be resumed.
