OTHER HANGINGS.
So far as the information of the Democrat extends, the hanging of
John Roan makes the sixth legal execution that has taken place in Falls county
since it was organized, but this is the first one for the crime of which Roan
was convicted.
In 1859 a white man named Hinton was hanged
out near what is now the old fair grounds, for the murder of Whittaker, his
brother-in-law, near Reagan.
Silas Woods, a negro, was hanged in the old
jail yard a few years later. Woods murdered his wife and then hacked her
to pieces.
In the early seventies two white men were
hanged at a point near where the oil mill lake is now. One of the men was
named Jones and he was convicted on a charge of murder committed east of Marlin.
The other was named Milton and he paid the penalty for the killing of a man near
Perry.
Later on Wash Washington was hanged in
Oltorf pasture for killing another negro in the bottom.
WesWilliams was hanged about twenty-five
years ago for murdering his wife on Col A.E.Watson's place. Williams was
hanged at Bean Hill.
All threse were public, before the law was
changed to a requirement of private execution.
