HANGED BY REQUEST.
-----
Jim Buchanan Feared Mob And
Wanted To Die.
-----
An entirely new precedent
has been sent in the annals of Texas criminal history, that of a criminal being
hung by request without the formality of a trial.
Jim Buchanan, a black brute, who wa the
confessed murderer of Duncan Hicks and wife and the confessed assaulter and
murderer of their defenseless daughter was hanged at Nacogdoches yesterday
afternoon by the sheriff at the request of the culprit himself. The mob of
citizens were preparing to barbecue the negro by degrees, and it was the
certainty of this fate that induced Buchanan to request the sheriff to hang him,
without waiting for trial.
The consent of the district judge and
prosecuting attorney was obtained and the wretch was swung into eternity.
