GONE AFTER THE TAX.
-----
COUNTY ATTORNEY WANTS HAMRICKS TO PAY UP.
Austin,
Tex., Dec. 20.--George Carter, county attorney of Falls county, is here from
his at Marlin and today had a conference with the attorney-general regarding one
of the most celebrated land cases in Texas. It is the famous E. G. Hanrick
land case which was begun in the courts of Texas in 1878. The original
case itself involved eleven leagues of land, several leagues of which are
situated in Falls county. The case had gone to the United States supreme
court on two occasions and is not as yet settled. Mr. Carters is here,
however, only in connection with the tax feature of the case. Hanrick
bought the land about thirty years ago and upon his death some of his heirs came
from Ireland and claimed the land. Then began the endless litigation.
Finally the case went up to the supreme court on the question as to whether the
foreign heirs were entitled to the land or not. That tribunal held that
they were. During all this time that this land was in litigation no taxes
weae (sic) paid upon it and Mr. Carter is now trying to recover the back taxes
due on the land situated in Falls county and the case still being on the
attorney-general's docket. Mr. Carter was conferring with him as to the
next step to e taken in the case. Mr. Carter says that a large amount of
taxes are involved, and it is believed that a satisfactory compromise wil(l) be
made in the case.
