GREAT BUSINESS MEETING.
Lively Interest Shown By League
Members.
The regular monthly meeting of the Marlin Business League held at K. of P. hall
Monday night was noted for some interesting proceedings.
The meeting was quite well attended and the interest
was keen throughout. After reading of minutes a number of communications were
read and filed or referred to the proper committees. Among them were a
communication from the Dallas commercial club officially notifying the league of
their itenery and the scheduled arrival here on Monday afternoon next for the
night; a letter from E. E. Ritchison refering to the matter of having the
streets numbered; communication from an advertising agency desiring to place
advertising for Marlin.
After considerable discussion the matter of
entertaining the Dallas delegation was referred to the entertainment committee.
The question of an opera house was presented by Dr.
Robertson and elicited an interesting discussion. There was some difference of
opinion as to the best policy to pursue and the discussion took a wide range.
The question was disposed of by adopting a motion by W. W. Allen to appoint a
committee to canvass the property owners and others for further subscriptions to
stock for the erection of an opera house. Dr. Robertson, A. R. Wright and A. B.
McBride were appointed on said committee.
On motion the Marlin papers were requested to "whoop
up", the opera house enterprise. Mr. Nettles cited the successful agitation for
the Waco auditorium by the Times-Herald, as an illustration of the power of
printers' ink.
Under head of officers and committee reports there was
nothing of great importance to report just now, outside of the matters herein
enumerated.
The program as published in Monday's paper was taken
up, D. P. McAlpine "on visit to Houston" made a few remarks showing wherein
Marlin was handicapped as compared to other applicants.
F. M. Burkhead gave some information as to the effect
of the advertising and bustling that the T. & P. railway was doing for Mineral
Wells.
The matter of a general trades day for Marlin was
discussed and it was the concensus of opinion that it would be a good thing for
Marlin. The president was authorized, on motion of B. C. Nettles. to appoint a
committee, with T. A. Cheeves as chairman, to evolve a definite plan and present
same to board of directors at once.
Adjourned.
