LOCAL NEWS.
The Democrat has received an invitation to attend the exercises of the
nineteenth commencement of the State University at Austin June 8-11.
The winds of Saturday morning have injured
a great deal of the cotton and corn. The corn will straighten up alright
but the cotton is thought to be permanently injured.
Several county candidates were present and
an invitation was extended to all who could make a speech without referring to
politics were invited to do so. Only a few responded.
Mr. I J Nathan, manager of the Electric
Light company, says that all crops between Marlin and Temple were damaged a
great deal by the wind Saturday. In many places the cotton was wilted and
the corn was down.
Cards have been issued by Mr and Mrs
Porteles announcing the marriage of her sister Miss Julia Schmid to Jos. Sonka,
Wednesday June 11th, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's church, this city.
The I & G. N. machinists of Houston, Taylor
and San Antonio have gone out on a strike. The men made demands for a 3
cent an hour increase and for a limit of spprentices on the railroad company
which were denied and the walkout followed.
