James E. Hackett announces in the DEMOCRAT as a candidate for representative
in the legislature from Falls county.
Ernest Long a negro was arrested Sunday by Sheriff Greet on a charge of
stealing brass from I & G N railway.
Nick Goodrich came down from Fort Worth Saturday night to ship out 15 cars
of cattle from Marlin, Gatesville and Temple. Nick represents a commission
company of Fort Worth.
Peter Breham was placed in jail Thursday night on a charge of assault and
battery, the victim being his wife, who was formerly Miss Willie Nobles. Brehm
and his wife have been married about two years and reside east of town. The
grand jury is investigating the case.
Rev. Wm. Turner, colored, was taken to the county road gang Thursday in
default of an old tine judgment against him in 1901 amounting to $59.00. Turner
is the cripple negro who has just been released from the state penitentiary on a
charge of cotton theft, of which he was convicted and given two years in the
pen.
The grand jury accompanied by Judge Hunnicutt and others, accepted an
invitation from Road Superintendent Poole and went out to Big Creek Friday
afternoon to see the work being done by the road hands. The visitors were well
pleased with the work and especially so with courtesies extended by Mr. Poole
who spread and elegant supper for them.
Horace Parrack of Perry has purchased a farm in Erath county and will move
to it in the near future.
Three parties in detention for insanity in this county have been admitted to
the Southwestern asylum at San Antonio. There are now two others in jail
waiting for admission. The delay is occasioned by inadequate accommodations at
the asylums for the unfortunates.
P. N. Dilworth and J. W. Adams of Blevins were among the visitors to the
city Monday. Mr. Dilworth has not definitely decided yet whether he will enter
the race for representative saying that there is plenty of time yet.
Will Brooks, a negro was fined $1.00 and cost in justice court on a charge
of drunkenness.
County Treasurer, J. R. Howard announces in this issue as a candidate for
re-election.
Sheriff John C. Greer announces as a candidate for a second term as sheriff
of Falls county in this issue of the DEMOCRAT.

Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Bradford of Taylor are visiting relatives in Marlin for a
day or two, Mr. Bradford being a witness in a civil case in district court.
Senor Patricio Covetanes and Senorita Petra Belliambo were granted license
to marry on Friday. It is needless to add that they are of Spanish descent.
M. B. Young of Rosebud was a pleasant caller Friday. Mr. Young has been a
reader of the DEMOCRAT since its first issue.

Mr. James Sutherland of the Indian Territory is here on a ten days visit.
Mr. Sutherland states that his family are enjoying good health and that they
are very well pleased with their new home.
F. O. Bargainier has returned from a visit to his old at Fort Deposit, Ala.
He found people doing well back there, contented and happy. The boll weevil
had not shown itself in that section as yet, but there is much apprehension over
it.
Rosa Johnson and Charley Taylor, both highly colored, were arrested by the
city marshal for a disturbance in the restarurant east side of public square.
These are the first cases that have been filed in corporation court this year.
For the benefit of a visitor from Illinois, Tom Turner's famous fighting dog
had a bout with his old antagonist last night at Turner's saloon. The animal
was given a vicious yank from his den by the man from Illinois and the dog made
quick work of the animal. A large crowd witnessed the fight and enjoyed the fun
immensely.
Paul McCombs, the Dallas man who purchased the Peters farm west of Marlin,
is preparing to sink a number of artesian well on the same for the purpose of
irrigation. A previously stated, Mr. McCombs will plant the farm largely in
alfalfa and will use modern methods in cultivating the entire plantation which
consists or about 1200 acres. The machinery for will boring and the large
traction engine to be used on the farm had arrived and will be set to work in a
short time.
The fire department was called to the school building Tuesday afternoon to
extinguish and incipient fire that had started in the ceiling of the basement,
caused by the heat from the furnace. The fire was promptly extinguished by the
department. In doing so it was necessary to cut into the floor and this
constituted the only damage to the building. There appears to be some fault in
the manner in which the furnaces were put in and it is understood that the
school board will remedy the defect at once.
