The work of improving the appearance and condition of the court house goes on.
The change for the better is already quite noticeable.

Milam county officers went to Wilderville Tuesday and arrested Duke Hudson and
carried him to Cameron, where he was placed in jail. The charge against
him being the shooting of J. J. Taylor some time since. Bail was offered
but the officers would not accept it.--Rosebud News.

Rev. J. A. Jackson, of Occidene was in the city Monday and stated to the Democrat that he was preparing to move west. The post office and store at
Occidene will probably be discontinued.

D. R. Emerson has purchased the Haily farm of 150 acres near town from Alf
Childs.

There has been quite a great deal of typhoid fever in the county during the last
few months but it is now on the decrease.

Dr. G. P. Reeves is attending the Dallas State Fair. While away he goes to
Ellis county on business.

The rain that visited Marlin Monday extended over the greater portion of Central
Texas. There was considerable wind with the rain but no serious damage is
reported.

Monk Johnson, colored, had a narrow escape from being ground to sausage under
the car wheels of a south bound Central passenger train Monday afternoon.
Monk and his wife were going south and the woman had gotten aboard. Monk
remained on the platform until the train started and then made a leap for the
platform railing. After running over a negro woman and following the car
several yards he finally caught on but it was too late to gain a footing and he
was dragged about thirty yards before the train came to a stop and he was taken
aboard. The negro's grim hold probably saved him from instant death.

The Democrat has been informed that quite a great many tenent
farmers and some who own land will try their fortunes in another country another
year. In other words they expect to go west or to the territory.

County Attorney Frank Boyles has returned from an extended trip to the coast
country. The trip seems to have been very beneficial to him.

Your Uncle Russel Alger has been nominated for the senate over D. M. Ferry, the
seed man, by tghe republicans of Michigan. Ferry probably did not plant
when the moon was right.

It is claimed in the newspaper reports from Austin that the official records do
not bear out the statement of the investigating committee that convicts have
been "shot down like dogs." The numbere shot "while trying to escape"
within the past twenty years is placed at 150. The number shot during the
past as well as the present administration is placed as follows: Gov
Sayers, 15; Governor Culberson, 37, Governor Hogg, 30; Governor Ireland 28.

Secretary Harrison, of the Marlin Business League, has received a letter from
the Chicago Clinic and Pure Water Journal, asking for information upon which to
base a description of the Marlin Mineral Water. The letter states that the
Marlin water is not known at all in that section of the country, and that the
editor of the Clinic desires to place the virtues of the same before his
readers.

A protracted meeting was begun at the Methodist church Sunday night. The
pastor is assisted by Rev. R. A. Burroughs. The meeting will last about
two weeks.

F. B. Bratton, Calvin Bratton, Jr., Miss Roy Bratton, W. A. Cain and wife of
Alto Springs, were in the city Saturday night en route to the singing convention
at Wilderville.

The new cotton mill at Charlotte, S. C. is arranging to thribble its daily
output of carded cotton.

A. Haltmar has purchased the restaurant and bakery business of J. W. Christian
and took charge today. Adolph was formerly the proprietor of this business
in Marlin. For a number of years he has been at Hillsboro and Waxahachie.

A three
year old child of Mr. and Mr. (sic) and Mrs. J. Z. Adams died at their residence
at Otto Sunday afternoon. It had only been ill a few days and the trouble
was diptheria.
