John Bellinger
Some additional information concerning John
Bellinger.
He is properly
listed as having enlisted in the 2nd S.C. Infantry Company I in 1861. However,
he was discharged 29 Dec 1862 ("poor health"). The same day, he was commissioned
as Lieutenant, Signal Corps, PACS. Service was mainly in the Army of Tennessee.
He was "severely wounded" while serving as Signal Officer to MG Joseph Wheeler,
in Sep 64. (There were only sixty-one authorizations for officers and sergeants
in the Signal Corps - privates were detailed, with ten captains and a major as
senior; twenty slots were for 1st and 2nd lieutenants, making his "lowly rank" a
distinction in fact.)
He was son of Dr. John Bellinger (1804-1860) and Mary Geraldine Northrup
(1810-c1845), educated Georgetown (D.C., 1851-'56 - prep plus two). Occupation
"clerk" upon enlisting.
I do not know when he
"went to Texas" after the war, but he married 23 Jul 1874 Mary Pamela Westcott
(1851-1885), and fathered in Texas Mary (c1876), Roberta (1877), John (1879). He
is in the US census for Marlin, Falls County, 1880 (TX #213 and 1900 TX #587).
Occupation clerk in bank. Died San Antonio, TX, 17 Jan 1920. (Information from
David Bellinger, e-mail, 2 Jul 2005, plus my own military research.)
