James Peyton Wooley was born in Arcadia, Bienville Parish, Louisiana on
August 9, 1866. He came to the Chilton, Texas area in 1877 with his
parents, Robert Fulton Wooley and Mary Ann Adams.
Robert Fulton Wooley settled his wife and son in a log cabin and later moved
into a house. (The old log cabin is still partially standing, in the
middle of a corn field, surrounded by trees. It is now well over one
hundred years old.)
James Peyton Wooley was a farmer and attended business college in Waco. On
August 30, 1888 he married Lillie Viola Trewitt and they moved into
his father's log cabin.
Lillie Viola Trewitt was the daughter of Ira William Trewitt, Jr. and Sophia
Annie Powell. She was born in Dawson, Terrell County, Georgia and
came to Texas with her parents when she was 12 years old.
There were four children born to James Peyton Wooley and Lillie Viola
Trewitt, all of whom were born, raised and schooled in Chilton.
Ivy Wooley was born November 3, 1889. She married A.L.Lair and lived in San
Angelo where she taught school. There were no childdren. She
returned to Chilton after her husbands death to live with her
sister, Ettie. Ivy Died April 4, 1977 and is buried in Waco.
Aubrey, the only son, was born November 28, 1891. He died at the age of 27
and was unmarried. He died during a flu epidemic.
Mary Ann Wooley was born June 16, 1894. On September 14, 1912 she married
Elmer Mathie Adams II., who worked in the bank in Chilton. There
were four children born to them;
1. Elmer Mathie Adams III, born June 21, 1914, married 1st Lucille Moore,
2nd-Stella Hale. Elmer died in January 1971 in New Mexico.
2. Edith Adams was born November 25, 1918, married 1st-Willie James Tommie.
Three children born;
James Benson Tommie,
Linda Dee Tommie,
Jerry Lee Tommie.
Edith now lives in Hico, Texas with her husband H. Marvin Jones.
3. James Thomas Adams was born June 17, 1920, married Opal Griggs and lives
in Lubbock, Texas. They have one son,
James T. Adams, Jr.
4. Joe Earl Adams was born August 20, 1930, married Ruth Peters of West,
Texas. They have one child,
June Ann, and live in Waco, Texas.
Ettie Wooley was born August 24, 1897 in Chilton, Texas. She has lived there
all of her life on the family farm. She studied art after finishing
school. She is still very active in her farming business.
The James Peyton Wooley family has been in Falls County for well over one
hundred years and are well respected in the area. Few of the older
families are still in the area, as many have died or moved away.
Also of importance regarding this family is the fact that Robert F. Wooley
and Ira W. Trewitt both proudly served in the Confederate States
Army. Ira W. Trewitt's grave in the Mooresville Cemetery has an
official Confederate Army headstone.
Robert F. Wooley's father owned a substantial portion of land in Louisiana.
The father of Sophia Annie Powell also owned a large amount of land
in the State of Georgia, most of which was ravaged during the Civil
War.
