Willis Benjamin Wilkey, b 1851 in Russell County, Alabama, d after 1900 in Falls
County, Texas and buried in Carolina Cemetery-was a son of William Wilkey, II, b
1818 in North Carolina, and his wife, Mary E., b ca 1828 in Georgia, who were in
Russell County, Alabama by 1840; and a grandson of William Wilkey, I b ca 1790
in Rutherford County, North Carolina, who also was in Russell County, Alabama by
1840.
Willis Benjamin Wilkey was the third of eight children born to his parents. The
family owned a farm, where they reared their children-all born before the Civil
War. The children were: Mary E. Wilkey, James Wilkey, Willis Benjamin Wilkey,
John Wilkey, Unidentified Wilkey, Unidentified Wilkey, Zachariah Wilkey, and
Sarah Wilkey.
Willis Benjamin Wilkey married Alice Farmer, b September 1860 in South
Carolina-and both parents reported to have been born in New York; and their
seven children were born in Falls County, Texas:
Waters Wilkey, b April 1882; Leola Wilkey, b October 1884: Annie Wilkey, b April
1887; Julius Wilkey, b March 27, 1889, d December 1, 1942-who married November
10, 1917 to Martha Atkins, b July 23, 1895, d September 4, 1972-a daughter of
Joseph Warren and Margaret (Powell) Atkins, Jr.; Lawrence Wilkey, b June 7,
1893, d July 18, 1914 in the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Francisco; Louis Wilkey,
b December 1898; and William Wilkey, III, b December 1900.
